Average Americans (right) remain hopeful.
Before summer's over I thought I'd recommend a few reads for those lazy afternoons under an umbrella out at the shark-infested shore. First, sink your teeth into An Anthology of Bulwer-Lytton Bad Writing Award Winners, a 680-page can't-put-downer of awkward-to-simply awful prose deemed the worst by an eminent panel. Personally, I found the writing to be excellent.
Next, soak up The Essays of Yogi Berra, thought-provoking musings by the Hall of Fame backstop on everything from nanotechnology ("Geez, they're like tiny little wheels!") to symbolic logic ("Wha?").
And, if you haven't been swept away by the polluted tide, crack open the romantic novel Zabibah and the King, by Saddam Hussein, who, besides being a most persuasive writer of the Danielle Steele-Jackie Collins variety, is also a high-ranking politician in his native Iraq.
That's all for now, and good reading!
